A Study of Artificial Respiratory Dead Space in Hyperpneic Patients

Abstract
52 hyperpneic patients who had neither compensated respiratory alkalosis nor hypoxemic hyperpnea, were found in ICU during recovery stage of neurological problems and their blood gas results were shown to be below 30 mmHg of PaCO2. So 22mm (diameter) light plastic corrugated tube was used as artificial dead space.
The results are followed:
1) At first, I made a rule of suitable dead space volume and amount of oxygen supply with patient¢¥s weight.
2) Patients¢¥ pH and blood gas results were changed after using dead space by above rule: pH: 7.61¡¾0.04 to 7.52¡¾0.04
pCO2: 24.5¡¾2.5 mmHg to 30.3¡¾2.8 mmHg
pO2: 88.9¡¾5.5 mmHg to 122.2¡¾10.3 mmHg
3) Though same flow of oxygen supply, more effective high pO2 can be obtained with artificial dead space.
4) Higher humidified gas can be inspired than room air inhalation.
5) Some inconveniences were found in patients who had too small tidal volume or profuse secretion.
